    • Kilometer Zero on ground in front of clock tower 
    • La Mallorquina (really good bakery) 
  • Plaza Mayor (aka old Madrid) 
  • Madrid Rio (river parks) 
  • The Royal Palace (Great for a sunset!) 
    • 1-2 hours to explore
  • Prado (art museum) 
  • Go to Chocolateria San Gines for Chocolate con churros- It's one of the oldest in Madrid! 
  • La Latina neighborhood packed with tapas bars 
  • On SUNDAY, check out the El Rastro outdoor market 
  • Gran Via is the high end shopping street with theaters and stores 
  • Food- 
    • Marzipan is a Spanish treat- kind of like candy corn, but way way better 
    • Museum of Jamones- Spanish Ham stores 
      • La Oreja de Jaime- Sauteed pigs’ ears, 
      • pimientos de Padrón (sautéed miniature green peppers) 
    • Casa Toni- 
      • gazpacho (cold tomato and basil soup) ((San Miguel is also good for gazpacho)), 
      • patatas bravas (fried potatoes in a spicy sauce), 
      • berenjena (deep-fried slices of eggplant)
      • champiñones (sautéed mushrooms) 
    • La Casa del Abuelo- gambas a la plancha (grilled shrimp) or gambas al ajillo 
  • Plaza de Cibeles- picturesque plaza, looks cool at night 
    • City Hall and Centro Centro (cultural center) 
    • Try rooftop of Cibeles Palace 
  • Retiro Park (Parque del Retiro) 
    • The Glass Palace (Palacio de Cristal) is free to enter
      • Sometimes they have free concerts or performances in here! 
    • Near Prado Museum 
  • Flamanco! 
    • Taberna Casa Patas (big name artists sometimes show up / dance here) 
    • Las Carboneras 
    • Las Tablas Flamenco
    • I did Las Coroners (the Sandeman tour guide had a voucher for a discount)
  • Barrio de Salamanca 
    • Foodies should head to El Gourmet Experience at Serrano Street's El Corte Inglés department store. This is where you'll find budget-friendly cuisine by Michelin-star-rated chefs. 
    • While in the neighborhood, you may also wish to stop at the National Archeological Museum. Note that it's free to enter on Saturdays after 2pm, and on Sundays in the morning. 
    • Make time to pay a visit to the very traditional food market, Mercado de la Paz (not during Spanish lunch hours, though, as most kiosks close between 2pm-5pm) 
  • San Anton Market 
    • Gastro lovers hotspot 
    • Can buy fish/meat, and have it prepared at the rooftop restaurant- La Cocina de San Anton 
  • The Gourmet Experience @ Corte Ingles Michelin rated chiefs, affordable prices 
  • Fatigas Del Querer (restaurant) 
    • Beef Entrecot
  • El Chibles Plaza (National Bank of Spain) looks really beautiful lit up at night 
  • Try to find the Nunnery near the Plaza Mayor for Galletas (cookies). It’s really well hidden, most locals don’t know about it. But it’s worth hunting down if you can. 
  • Tolado- The old capital of Spain (guava (high speed) train- 20/30 minutes) 
    • Knifes and damascene jewelry 
    • Catedral 
    • Mirador del Valle (view of town, mini train?) 
    • Santo Tome- great marzipan 
    • Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes (3 euro) 
    • Mosquede La Crist Puerta del Sol 
    • For lunch, check out the fixed menu at the Tavern at Alfile Ritos 
  • I stayed in the Way Hostel. Good price for a 4 bed dorm, and the front desk people knew what was up.
